COVID-19 and children under 12: How the pandemic affects the unvaccinated

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 5,781 new coronavirus cases Monday for the period Friday through Sunday. The highly contagious delta variant is fueling new cases.
On Monday, the state reported 125 new coronavirus-related deaths. Seventy-six deaths occurred between July 23 and Sept. 4, according to the health department’s website. Forty-nine deaths occurred between Aug. 1 and Aug. 30, as identified from death certificate reports.
Since COVID-19 hit the state in March 2020, a total of 452,664 COVID-19 cases and 8,664 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported.
The health department on Monday reported 146 outbreaks at Mississippi nursing homes. There have been 10,993 cases of the coronavirus in long-term care facilities and 2,047 deaths reported as of Monday.
According to a New York Times database, at least 377 new coronavirus deaths and 44,417 new cases were reported in the U.S. on Sunday. Over the past week, there has been an average of 161,327 cases per day, an increase of 8% from two weeks prior.
Residents between the ages of 25 and 39 represent the largest portion of the infected population in the state, with 101,441 cases reported Friday, the latest figure available.
Among patients under 18, children between the ages of 11 and 17 have the highest infection rate, with 40,615 cases identified. The 65 and older age group has the highest total number of deaths with 6,227 reported.
According to health department data, at least 1,433,469 people began the vaccination process in Mississippi as of Thursday. Since December, about 1,185,057 people have been fully immunized against COVID-19. At least 28,002 have received a third dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.
Approximately 372,119 people are presumed recovered from the virus as of Tuesday, according to the health department’s website.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Harrison County numbers have steadily climbed, overtaking Hinds County to record the highest number of reported cases with 30,666; Hinds County follows with 29,896 cases. DeSoto County is reporting 28,381 cases. Jackson County is reporting 21,932 cases and Rankin County has 20,526 total cases.
