Revenge is a staple motivator and plot point in anime, and some series like Tokyo Revengers revolve around the concept. It’s spawned a long list of memorable characters and backstories that would send them on lifelong quests.

With so many examples, there are still those revenge scenes that stand out from the rest. Whether it’s the unexpected factor, a well-executed plan, or simply a long-awaited and highly justified moment of justice, these revenge scenes push the envelope farther than the rest.
10 School Days Switches From High School Harem To Dark Revenge
School Days begins with a high school story, then a love triangle and harem trope. But for many fans, the series reaches its peak when it delves into the darker side of the story. Sekai crushes on Makoto even as she tries to help him get together with his own crush, Kotonoha. But, he’s soon sleeping with pretty much all the girls at school, to Sekai’s dismay.
After her false claim of pregnancy, Makoto adds insult to injury by getting back together with Kotonoha. Sekai responds by stabbing him to death.
9 Tatsumi Gets Revenge On Aria With One Swing Of His Sword (Akame Ga Kill!)
Tatsumi ends up joining the Night Raid in Akame Ga Kill! in part because of what ends up happening to his childhood friend Sayo. After leaving his village, he meets Aria, a wealthy young woman who invites him to stay at her home.
When the Night Raid attack, he fights for Aria and tries to protect her–until they reveal her true nature and the fact that it was Aria’s family who tortured Sayo to death. Tatsumi then gets revenge by killing Aria with one swing of his sword.
8 Tanjiro’s Revenge For Urokodaki’s Students Kicks Off Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Tanjiro Kamado’s journey to vengeance in the Final Selection arc of Kimetsu no Yaiba is particularly memorable and kicks off the whole series. The Demon who killed thirteen of Sakonji’s students–including the Kamado siblings–lives on Mt. Fujikasane. That’s where Tanjiro goes for his Final Selection tests on the way to becoming a Demon Slayer.
He crosses paths with the Demon and attacks him in a rage. As he cuts his throat, the souls of Urokodaki’s students are released, and able to leave for the afterlife.
7 Kogami Goes Rogue To Get Revenge On Makishima (Psycho-Pass)
Psycho-Pass pits Shinya Kogami, an Enforcer, against criminal head Shogo Makishima. Makishima is able to control his own Psycho-Pass, and so is unrecognized by the Sibyl system–even though he is responsible for the death of Mitsuru Sasayama, a former partner of Kogami.

Since Sibyl doesn’t recognize Makishima as a threat, Kogami has to go rogue to get revenge. She hunts him down with Akane. When Shogo runs out of bullets. Shinya follows the trail of his blood to finally pull the trigger and get her revenge.
6 Sakunosuke Oda Gets Revenge & Respect From Gide (Bungo Stray Dogs)
Sakunosuke Oda is a former assassin for the Port Mafia. He retires and adopts a bunch of cute kids. But, during the Dark Era arc, a war between the Port Mafia and Mimic catches up to him, and the children are kidnapped and killed.
It pushes Oda to violence again for the first time in years, and he picks off many of the Mimics himself one by one. He ends with their leader Gide, and after a formidable battle, both of them are left dying–but with respect for each other.
5 Kaneki Gets Revenge For Ten Days Of Torture (Tokyo Ghoul)
Yakumo Oomori gets the nickname of the 13th Ward’s Jason because of his brutality. In the Aogiri arc, he and Nico are sent by the leaders of Aogiri Tree to capture the person who smells like Rize–i.e. Kaneki. They nab him and Jason tortures him mercilessly for 10 days.
After killing both Kouto and Kei, though, he’s gone too far and Kaneki’s ghoul side is triggered. He frees himself, and they fight until Kaneki eats Yamori’s kagune and leaves him on the floor.
4 Afro Samurai Builds To Its Climactic Revenge Scene With Unique Style
Afro Samurai begins with Rokutaro, Afro’s father, and his defeat at the hands of Justice. It’s all about that Number One headband that Rokutaro has—and Justice wants. It sets the Afro Samurai on his quest for revenge, and what a wild trip it is.

The showdown, even though it’s anticipated, given the convoluted journey he takes to get there, the characters, (and Samuel L. Jackson, naturally), and the insanity of the fight scene itself, make it one of the more spectacular revenge scenes in anime.
3 Spike’s Revenge For Julia’s Death Is Epic (Cowboy Bebop)
Spike Spiegel and Vicious were once friends in the world of Cowboy Bebop. But, then they both fell for Julia and fell out with each other. Julia’s ordered by Vicious to kill Spike, but she goes underground instead, although she is eventually found and assassinated by the syndicate.
It spurs Spike to finally confront Vicious on his own turf in the grand finale of the series, and one of the most satisfying revenge scenes in anime. Already critically wounded, Spike still manages to get in one last shot to Vicious to the chest.
2 Envy Completes Roy Mustang’s Revenge Out Of Humiliation (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Envy comes across Roy Mustang after trying to capture Mei and eventually admits to the murder of Roy’s friend, Maes Hughes. While Envy is transforming back into their gigantic original form, Roy sends a blast that boils their eyes and covers them in flames.
Envy returns to human form and tries to escape, but Roy is in hot pursuit and catches up with them to burn them again. Envy is eventually cornered, but Mustang is talked out of killing them by Riza, Scar, and Edward. Humiliated, Envy crushes their own Philosopher’s Stone and disintegrates.
1 Shikamaru Exacts A Die-Hard-Style Revenge On Hidan (Naruto Shippuden)
Hidan is one of the immortal shinobi in Naruto Shippuden, and he uses his voodoo curse to kill Asuma, the leader of Team 10. Asuma’s loyal student Shikamaru vows revenge. He uses a very clever and elaborate strategy to trap Hidan, then his shadow summoning technique to wrap a series of explosive tags all over his body.
Shikamaru laughs as he flicks a lighter and throws it at Hidan. He explodes and his various parts land ignominiously in a pit. One last exploding tag obliterates him for good.
