Julia Yang began her baking journey when she was just 3 years old, now she’s twenty-four and building success out elaborate custom cakes.
From intricate creations of anime figures like Nezuko in the Demon Slayer, Gojo Satoru from Jujutsu Kaisen and Sailor man Moon to wedding and baby shower celebration cakes – Yang comes with an impressive eye for detail.
Yang began to bake from the youthful age together with her mother for Sunday service at church. She began to assist by gathering ingredients then mixing and eventually taking over.
Julia Yang told blogTO that, “When I got older I needed to incorporate more cake adornments and add a more creative aspect. I attempted my favorite to learn to decorate cakes by watching lots of videos online, studying books and trying out plenty of recipes.”
Yang visited Ryerson College for Business but following a year of her parents seeing it had not been her passion they encouraged her to follow along with her baking ambitions and have a course in baking or culinary rather.
She then visited George Brown College and studied culinary and strangely enough, the savoury techniques she learned in her own program could be relevant to her baking.
“I needed to use the strategy which i would study from savoury and put it on sweet,” stated Yang.
She explains that they uses the same technique as making pasta on her baking. “I produce a well for that wet ingredients and progressively incorporate it in to the dry ingredients – except I mix in a bowl and never on the slab of wood.”
Before the pandemic, Yang was working as a server in the airport terminal. When everything began to seal lower she had more time to pay attention to her craft and use what she learned in her own business and culinary program and put it on her cake business.
