There are many ways a group of friends can be awkward. A pair of individuals might have differing opinions, but became friends in spite of it. Some friends just don’t really get along, even if they really do care for each other deep down. There are also times when two friends can even start off as rivals, constantly trying to one-up each other.

Sometimes, the awkwardness can be a good thing, and the friends can have a positive influence on each other. Other times, the differences can eventually get in the way, and the story ends with everything going up in smoke between the two former friends.
10 Sailor Moon: Usagi & Rei Certainly Fight A Lot
In the ’90s Sailor Moon anime, Usagi and Rei usually do not get along too well, with Rei often insulting or scolding Usagi before it eventually escalates into a screaming match or even a physical fight between the two. Despite that, even Usagi isn’t above abandoning Rei to the occasional monster-of-the-week.
That said, they do care about each other and have even given up their lives to protect one another. Interestingly, it’s implied that Usagi is actually closer to Rei than the others, having even once trusted the Silver Crystal to her when she feared she wasn’t strong enough to keep it from the villains. In general, the ’90s anime just loved to have Usagi get along poorly with those she cares about, whether it’s her love interest Mamoru, who also bullies her at first, or her time-traveling daughter, Chibiusa.
9 Yu Yu Hakusho: Yusuke & Kuwabara Are Rivals Turned Best Friends
Yusuke and Kuwabara of Yu Yu Hakusho started out as delinquent rivals, but Yusuke’s death, complete with Kuwarabara’s broken reaction to his passing, marked the start of their unusual friendship. They eventually join forces once Yusuke returns to life and becomes an agent of the Spirit World. Kwabara will probably only admit that Yusuke is his best friend after cursing him out.
Of course, this seems to be the norm for Yusuke’s friendships. He joined forces with Hiei despite starting out as a villain who targeted Keiko. Ironically, despite starting out as a bully, Kuwabara can be said to be the nicest member of Team Urameshi.
8 Princess Tutu: Lilie Really Wants Ahiru’s Life To Be Tragic
In Princess Tutu, Ahiru’s two best friends from her dancing class are Pique and Lilie. Lilie, in particular, takes some sadistic pleasure in seeing Ahiru humiliate herself and even hopes that she’ll end up with Fakir since she thinks the relationship is destined for tragedy. Pique is generally seen as the nicer of the two since she wants the best for Ahiru deep down, but even she can be pretty insulting towards her.

It does not help that Ahiru is really a duck magically granted a human form and that the two girls are magically manipulated into thinking Ahiru is their third friend.
7 Dragon Ball: Mr. Satan Turns Out To Be A Surprisingly Good Influence On Buu
At first glance, Mr. Satan and Innocent Buu of Dragon Ball are opposites, essentially being an anti-villain and an anti-hero. Mr. Satan, also known as Hercule, pretends to be a great hero and gets credit for actions that rightfully belong to others. Buu is an incarnation of an evil and violent entity, but is rather childlike and naive, despite the threat he poses.
Interestingly, Mr. Satan turns out to be a good influence on Buu as he is the one who convinces him to stop killing people. One of the video games, Dragon Ball Fusions, even shows a fusion between the two.
6 Vampire Princess Miyu: Miyu Should Have Been More Suspicious Of Chisato
In Vampire Princess Miyu, Miyu hunts parasitic monsters called Shinma, despite the fact that she is just as much a monster as those she hunts. In spite of this, some versions have her want to make human friends and have as close of a normal life as possible. In the TV series, she ends up befriending three schoolgirls, with Chisato getting more focus than the other two.
Unfortunately, as the series goes on, Chisato turns out to be a dormant Shinma and ends up killing the other two girls before eventually facing off against Miyu herself.
5 Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt: Brief Is A Put-Upon Sidekick For The Anarchy Sisters
While investigating a ghost at a local high school, the Anarchy sisters, the titular Panty and Stocking from Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt, encounter a self-proclaimed ghost hunter named Brief who soon becomes their sidekick of sorts.
The relationship is complicated by different matters. The Anarchy sisters dub him “Geek Boy” and tend to look down on him. For his part, he also has a crush on Panty, which eventually get reciprocated once he slicks back his hair.
4 Black Clover: Asta & Yuno Are Just As Much Friends As They Are Rivals
Asta and Yuno are a study in contrasts. Yuno is talented when it comes to his Wind Magic, while Asta initially seems to lack magical potential entirely. Yuno has plenty of fans and admirers while Asta tends to be a laughingstock. Despite this, they are just as much best friends as they are rivals, with them both sharing a dream of becoming the Wizard King. It helps they were raised together, being taken in by the same church.

Yuno might not admit it, but he looks up to Asta and he will even go as far as to foil schemes against Asta. At the start of the story, he seems to be the only character who believes in Asta.
3 Fruits Basket: Tohru, Arisa, & Saki Are Certainly An Odd Trio
Tohru Honda, Arisa Uotani, and Saki Hanajima of Fruits Basket are all completely different in terms of personality and background. Tohru is practically a modern-day ingenue who just can’t help but love everyone despite having a rough life from being bullied, looked down on by her relatives, and even being homeless for a time. Arisa is a former delinquent who still tends to come off as tough. Saki is a stoic, quiet girl with psychic powers who people mistake for a witch.
Despite this, they are the best of friends and exceedingly loyal to each other. Of course, Tohru being so loving makes it all the easier to see the good in people and make friends with them.
2 One Piece: It’s Hard To Believe That Sanji & Zoro Are On The Same Crew
The Straw Hat Pirates of One Piece will always have at least two of its members fighting with each other at any given moment, but the two that stand out the most are Sanji and Zoro, who have a strong sense of rivalry.
This might play into the two being some of the strongest members of the crew, albeit in different ways. Of course, they also seem to have some respect for each other. They just rarely admit to it.
1 Naruto: Things Were Already Awkward Between Naruto & Sasuke Before The Latter Turned Evil
The world of Naruto is filled with pairs of characters who can’t just decide on whether or not they get along, but the two most famous are Naruto and Sasuke. At the start, the two were not above insulting each other and attacked each other with all they had.
Then things actually got worse when Sasuke becomes more of a villain. With all the ensuing highs and lows between the two, there always is an element of rivalry, healthy or otherwise. And yet, they can also be said to have one of anime’s strongest relationships.
